Bccap Recap

Updated: Apr 15

It’s been an eventful month and a half for the Brookings Colorectal Cancer Awareness Program. This blog post provides an overview of the amazing opportunities the team has had to raise awareness for colorectal cancer:

Captain Colon Visits the Brookings Hospital

The Brookings Health System graciously allowed our awesome mascot, Captain Colon, to visit the Brookings Hospital. While there, the captain was able to see the process of getting a colonoscopy. This opportunity resulted in fun and educational content that BCCAP will be able to use in years to come.

Tabling at the Welly (SDSU Wellness Center)

The BCCAP team, featuring Captain Colon, visited the Wellness Center to hand out flyers and granola bars. This was done twice over the course of the campaign, and provided an opportunity to reach both the community members who attend the gym as well as college students.

Trivia Night at Wooden Legs

Wooden Legs Brewing Company was a wonderful host for this fun and educational event. Captain Colon hosted one round featuring trivia questions related to colorectal health. Guests were offered stickers and information, as well as the opportunity to take a picture with Captain Colon.

Tabling at Hy-Vee

A small unit of BCCAP braved a brisk Monday morning to share information with the Brookings community. This event captured BCCAP’s target audience during their shopping trip and created opportunities for conversation regarding colorectal cancer screening.

Final Thoughts

This year’s BCCAP team was able to promote colorectal cancer awareness in a variety of unique ways. It was a memorable capstone course for SDSU’s public relations students. We can’t wait to see how next year’s team builds on this program!
