Lifestyle changes that help prevent colorectal cancer

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer. There are factors, such as genetics, that put people at a higher risk for developing colorectal cancer. Even though there are factors that cannot be controlled, there are a variety of lifestyle changes you can make to reduce the risk of developing colorectal cancer. Here are some ways to reduce the risk of developing colorectal cancer, according to the American Cancer Society.

Adjust your diet. Including more vegetables, fruits and whole grains in your diet may reduce the risk of colorectal cancer. It is important to eat a healthy amount of fiber. Limiting red and processed meat may also help.

Get regular exercise. Being regularly active lowers your risk of developing colorectal cancer. It is important to limit the amount of time you spend sitting. Maintaining a healthy weight is also important.

Don’t smoke. Smoking leads to many health concerns, as well as increasing the chances of developing colorectal cancer.

Avoid alcoholic beverages. People that consume alcohol are more likely to develop colorectal cancer than those who do not. It is best to limit alcohol or avoid it altogether.

Get screened. A screening can detect colorectal cancer early on. Colorectal cancer begins as abnormal cells that form into polyps. If untreated, in 10 to 15 years the polyps turn into colorectal cancer. The recommended age to start getting screened is 45. People should get screened for colorectal cancer even if they are not having any symptoms.
